Mel L (Nickname: Melim) - Soprano
If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Manipulation of the space/time continuum – wraps up both teleportation and time travel in a nice little package!
Aside from Soulstice, what do you do with your life?
I’m in my second-last year of studying Law and Politics.
What are your major influences/sources of inspiration?
It might sound cheesy, but when it comes to musical inspiration, I can’t go further than the rest of the Soulstice crew. I love how everyone brings their unique voices, styles and talents together to make something that’s more than the sum of our parts. Every rehearsal is an inspiration!
What is your musical background and how long have you been singing?
I’ve been singing in choirs and playing the piano since primary school, and had vocal lessons in high school. I’d always loved singing as part of a group, and really missed it when I started university… and then I joined Soulstice, and it filled the musical void in my life!
What music do you listen to?
I listen to a lot of alternative rock and indie pop (Snow Patrol, Death Cab for Cutie, Jack’s Mannequin, Dashboard Confessional), and I have a particular soft spot for female singer-songwriters who play the piano: Lucy Schwartz, Charlotte Martin, A Fine Frenzy and Brooke Fraser are a few particular favourites. I also really like listening to soundtracks! I usually fall in love with new artists through TV shows or movies that feature their music.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Microwave popcorn. I will eat an entire family-sized bag all by myself within half an hour!
Team Edward or Team Jacob?
Team Buffy. She’d beat them both hands down.
Which would you rather wear for a month: bright green crocs or a “<3 Justin Bieber 4 Glee” badge on your chest?
Tough choice. I think I’m going to have to go with the crocs. That way, I could keep a tiny shred of dignity!
